Folie to Building

BRIEF

Design a primary school environmental education centre
used during the weekday by Primary School students and by the public at nights and on weekends

Maximum new site building footprint : 500 sqm

Height Limit : height of cliff

- 1500 sq m min development, 3000 sq m max development
- Entry plaza
- Lunch area
- Classes for 2 x 25 students
- 2 indoor exhibition halls
- 1 outdoor exhibition hall
- Historical play space
- Must incorporate live animals into design

Brainstorming

Environmental Learning Centre designed using key concepts Experiential Learning and Linkages

Natural disasters exhibition hall
                  |
Endangered animals due to these disasters
                 |
Aviary including birds that are endangered

Could possibly link the building up to the river and create a section for the students to explore the animals within the brisbane river

Animal exhibitions - particular animals brought into the centre for presentation (endangered)

Historical Play Space: could be historical in the literal sense of the word - incorporating olden day play items such as swings hung from trees, hop scotch, marbles, handball etc

Site & possible areas for proposed building

SITE:

The image shows the possible area for building along the HSW site. The area that has cars parked in it is one possible site to build on due to its large size, but it is inhibited by the heritage buildings directly in front of it. The are to the right of the largest heritage building is most likely the most appropriate position for the proposed building

Tutorial Process Work

Possible Key Concepts derived from folie;

- multiculturalism : japanese art of paper folding included in design
- floods : symbolises the actions taken by brisbane after the floods
- community : same principal as above
- experiences : learning to fold a paper crane
- learning : being taught how to make origami within the site
- moods : place of quiet away from the bustling city
- tranquility : same as above and also mood that is induced within the space
- relaxation : achieved through the paper folding activity
- connection : drawing users in from the neighbouring suburbs
- linking : same as above but finding further ways to use the site to increase usability

The most appropriate key concepts I chose:

EXPERIENCES              LEARNING                     CONNECTION                         LINKING
         |                                     |                                         |                                            |
relates directly                similar to               important particularly             similar to previous
to both folie                  previous but            to the HSW site due to      but emphasising the site
and educational            focussing                 its different type of                the possible linkages
learning centre            purely on the                      location                              of the site
                                          activity

Amalgamation of these concepts : . EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING & LINKAGES

Exemplars

After analysing my folie and determining the core concepts I initially thought of the idea of an educational environmental centre that focusses on the positive actions that can be made to start reinventing the environment. There is always so much emphasis on the negative impacts that we have had on the world but I do not believe that there is enough information given to children about that positive ideas that we can practice to create a more positive future, environmentally. The following exemplar was very interesting to me as I enjoyed the idea of the green grass walls. The school is designed by Spanish architecture firm Estudio Huma and was created with the ideal of teaching from nature.

The following design by Studio Daniel Libeskind correlates directly to my folie through the angular panels and geometric/paper-like structure. I found this home to be very interesting in the way that the architect did not focus directly on the usage of the home (the residents did not care for this) but more the almost non-existant distinction between the interior and exterior.
